No baby has a natural fear of the water, this is something that develops over time and babies learn through negative experiences. Always portray a happy expression to your baby when in water, you will be suprised at the positive effect this can have on your little one The earlier you introduce your child to the water the sooner they will become relaxed and familiar within the aquatic environment and its physical challenges, in turn they will learn to relax around water and learn to respect the water and then more importantly have great FUN.
Babies can go swimming from birth provided the pool chlorinated and heated to a minimum of 30 degrees, Baby Wetsuits are great to keep their little bodies warm and snug.
Sutton Dolphins have taught many babies to swim over the years with our main aim being to make babies and young children safe in and around the water. To our delight we are now seeing and hearing how some of our babies who have continued with their swimming and have developed into great swimmers with some going on to compete nationally.
Sutton Dolphins was established in 2003 and if anyone is still swimming or competing and you would like to email us a picture and update us on your progress we will post this online. Email us at email@example.com.
"I signed up to join Sutton Dolphins before my little girl Frankie was born and we started at 8 weeks. From day one Frankie loved her swim class so much laughing and splashing around, she greeted the water with confidence and excitement rather than fear and I'm sure this is down to the brilliant instructors Michelle and Libby who always ensure everyone is comfortable and included and the class is fun as well as safe and structured. Frankie had soon learnt all the songs, learnt how to float on her back, how to hold on to the side, jump in, submerge safely underwater, swim after toys in the water and most importantly enjoy herself in the water. The emphasis is on play, fun and safety and I cannot recommend this group enough for getting your child used to the water at an early age. The basics are now instilled into Frankie so much that even in our holiday pool she swam straight to the side of the pool to find the bar to hold on to, (shes 9 months).
It's also nice for us mums as it's something to look forward to doing every week with other likeminded mums, the pool is warm and therapeutic and everyone Is friendly. It's such a great class for both mother and child (and the occasional fathers) Its worth every penny and has been the highlight of our week on maternity leave. Thanks Michelle and Libby for a great year of swimming and helping to make my daughter the confident and fearless little girl she's becoming!"
